FORUM supports Alaskan writers and storytellers, shares stories that are underrecognized in statewide media, and connects readers with an inclusive narrative of our state’s past, present, and future.
Many stories make up Alaska – many voices, many cultures, and many identities. At the Alaska Humanities Forum (AKHF), we believe that stories strengthen our communities by bridging differences, sparking connections, and inspiring understanding between people.

2024 Announcement
We are very excited to announce another year of FORUM, the publication of the Alaska Humanities Forum. This year we are piloting several changes to the magazine, including a more robust digital format; a themed editorial calendar; and a storytelling fellowship. Through these changes, we are working to continue to deepen our commitment to highlighting and uplifting underrepresented voices, narratives, people, and places in Alaska. We are maintaining the same editorial values as the past two issues, which aim to provide less editing of articles and essays (with a less uniform voice to the magazine) so that the writer's voice is centered. Learn more below!
We are also piloting a new editorial calendar intending to highlight specific themes each month. These themes align with programming at the Alaska Humanities Forum. You can find the editorial calendar below. You'll note that each theme might have multiple interpretations and that is intentional. We're excited to see your interpretation of each theme and the stories you can create through the prompts. Currently accepting pitches.
There are three categories of stories we're assigning:
Long-form article: $800 (around 2500 words + photo)
Essay or Profile: $250 (around 1000-1500 words + photo)
Photo Essay: $250 (2-3 photographs with captions + short explanation)
We will host two 4-month cohorts each year, consisting of between 4 and 6 participants. This paid fellowship will prioritize recruiting previously unpublished writers, and serve as a venue for publishing stories that are underrepresented in statewide media. Applications will reopen in Winter 2024.

We are piloting a shift to a more robust digital format. Stories will be updated weekly on our website and promoted through a monthly e-newsletter. At the end of each calendar year, we will publish a printed issue of FORUM that will showcase a selection of digital articles. We will be charging a fee to purchase the book as a fundraiser to support our new Storytelling Fellowship.
We will be launching a new section of our website dedicated to FORUM digital stories soon! Printed issues will be available for purchase at the end of the calendar year.
