Recipient of 2009 Governor's Award for the Humanities: Dr. Rudolph Krejci
Dr. Rudolph Krejci

Dr. Krejci is a University of Alaska Fairbanks philosophy professor who has retired yet remains active as a faculty doctoral program advisor, mentor to students, volunteer instructor and guest lecturer. Dr. Krejci was a protégé of British philosopher Sir Karl Popper and the founder of University of Alaska's first Philosophy Department.

Recipient of 2009 Governor's Award for the Humanities: Dr. James Kari
Dr. James Kari

Dr. Kari is Professor Emeritus with the Alaska Native Language Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, having served on the UAF faculty from 1973 to 1997 as a linguist specializing in the Alaskan Athabascan languages. Dr Kari has maintained an active program of research and publication since his retirement and his contributions to the files of Athabascan linguistics are ongoing.

2009 Alaska History and Culture Teacher of the Year: Ms. Lynda Leal
Lynda Leal

Ms. Leal grew up in Grayling in Interior Alaska and graduated from Mt. Edgecumbe High School. She earned her BA in Sociology/Anthropology and Asian Studies from St. Olaf College in Minnesota. Ms. Leal decided that she could best serve the Alaska Native Community by becoming a teacher and got her Ed. M. from Harvard University before returning to Alaska in 2004. She teaches World History and Alaska Studies at Bartlett High School in Anchorage.

The Awards for the Humanities is an annual series of awards honoring the contribution of individuals and groups that enrich the civic, intellectual, and cultural life of all Alaskans through the wisdom and techniques of the humanities. Please scroll down for past humanities award recipients.

Eligibility

Any Alaskan individual, organization, or institution that has advanced the humanities in Alaska and the world. Current Board of Directors and staff of the Alaska Humanities Forum are not eligible for consideration.

Procedure

Nominations must follow the format below and may be submitted by mail, fax, or electronically, by August 2, 2010. Self-nominations are not allowed. Governor's Awards will be announced in late September 2010.

The banquet honoring Governor's Arts & Humanities awards will be held in Fairbanks, Alaska on Thursday October 21, 2010 in conjunction with the Alaska Federation of Natives conference. For reservations or information on this event, please contact the Alaska State Council on the Arts at 907-269-6610 or 1.888.278.7424.

All nominations must be received online or postmarked by August 2, 2010. A panel will be convened in late August/early September to review nominations and pass along a list of proposed awardees for final approval to the Governor of Alaska. Final awardees will be contacted by the Alaska Humanities Forum, in conjunction with the Office of the Governor of Alaska.

Criteria for review by the panel may include (but are not limited to):

  • Impact in furthering/advocating for the humanities in Alaska;
  • Excellence in achievement in a field of study, area of research, or project related to the humanities;
  • Life-, group-, or institution-long commitment to the humanities in the state;
  • Innovation in the wisdom and methods of the humanities;
  • Leadership in expanding understanding and appreciation of the humanities in the state;
  • Representing the best of the humanities in Alaska to the rest of the nation and the world
Award Selection

Awardees are selected through a statewide nomination process.  The selection of finalists is reviewed by the governor’s office.

Proceeds

Any proceeds from the evening jointly benefit the Alaska Arts and Culture Foundation and programs of the Alaska Humanities Forum.

Recognition

Corporate table sponsors receive a table for ten and are acknowledged in the event program.
